JOB DESCRIPTION

 

TITLE: CUSTODIAN

 

REPORTS TO: ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT, BUILDING PRINCIPAL AND HEAD CUSTODIAN, IF AVAILABLE.

 

JOB GOAL: THE CUSTODIAN WORKS UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF BUILDING PRINCIPAL OR HIS DESIGNEE.  CLEANS AND WAXES FLOORS;  CLEANS FURNITURE AND WALLS;  KEEPS RESTROOMS CLEAN;  MAINTAINS EQUIPMENT AND TURNS OFF LIGHTS;  PERFORMS SEMI-SKILLED DUTIES IN MAINTAINING BUILDING AND EQUIPMENT;  PERFORMS OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.

 

PAY COLUMN: BASE

 

Performance Responsibilities

  1. The custodian will adhere to all local, state and national regulations.
  2. They will adhere to all rules and regulations set forth by the Poplar Bluff Board of Education.
  3. The custodian is under the direct supervision of the head custodian/building principal.  The principal will keep the administrative assistant posted of any problems with custodians. 
  4. Ability to perform semi-skilled work in various trades.
  5. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  6. The skill to use basic tools and equipment.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Clean and wax floors.
    1. Sweep and mop floors
    2. Assure all dust and gum are removed
    3. Mop floors using detergent and water
    4. Strip old wax from floors with a buffer
    5. Remove stripper and allow to dry
    6. Apply wax and buff when dry
    7. Operate a vacuum sweeper if necessary
    8. Sweep outside walks and steps
  2. Clean furniture and walls
    1. Clean ash trays and empties wastepaper baskets
    2. Dust furniture, desks and woodwork
    3. Wipe spots off walls when necessary
    4. Wash windows
    5. Clean water fountains
  3. Keep restroom clean
    1. Clean walls of restrooms
    2. Sweep and mop floors daily
    3. Clean commodes and water basins
    4. Scrub shower stalls when necessary
    5. Maintain a supply of toilet tissue and paper towels
  4. Mow and trim lawn and maintain shrubs
  5. Unlock all doors each morning
  6. Check to make sure the heat is on throughout the building
  7. Lock up building, securing all doors and turning off all unnecessary lights.
  8. Performs semi-skilled duties in maintaining building.
    1. Replace window panes if required.
    2. Replace light bulbs
    3. Resets break switches
    4. Checks and adjusts room temperatures
    5. Checks boilers periodically and reports malfunctions to principal.
    6. Repairs lockers and doors if required.
    7. Reports all acts of vandalism to principal
    8. Establishes and maintains a regular schedule for cleaning building
    9. Reports needed supplies to the principal
    10. Reports any irregularities to the principal
    11. Checks playground equipment when requested
    12. Remove kitchen grease trap above range for cleaning by cooks once every 6 months.  Then replace trap.
    13. Performs other duties as assigned.
    14. Asbestos – required to take and pass 2 hour asbestos training as required by AHERA within 60 days of employment.
    15. Follow all E.P.A. guidelines for Buildings/Grounds.

Essential Functions of the Job

  1. Must be able to lift, carry and load equipment and supplies that will weigh as much as 30-60 pounds, 3-10 times a day.
  2. Must be able to climb and work from ladders, step ladders and step stools.
  3. Must have dexterous use of both hands so as to be able to operate power tools, hand tools and mechanical hand tools.
  4. Must have previous experience in the safe operation and use of tools such as drills, saws, lawn mowers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, etc.
  5. Must be able to work indoors and outdoors (outdoors in hot, wet and cold (below freezing weather).
  6. This is strenuous work requiring good corrected vision, hearing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, lifting and the ability to work on the school buildings and grounds.
  7. Must be able to communicate clearly with teachers, students, administrators and other staff members.
  8. Must be able to read and understand written orders and instructions.
  9. Must be able to understand and follow up on oral and telephone delivered orders or instructions.
  10. Must have a valid state driver’s license.
