TITLE: COACH

REPORTS TO: BUILDING PRINCIPAL AND THE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

JOB GOAL: TO HELP EACH PARTICIPATING STUDENT ACHIEVE A HIGH LEVEL OF SKILL, AN APPRECIATION FOR THE VALUES OF DISCIPLINE AND SPORTSMANSHIP AND AN INCREASED LEVEL OF SELF-ESTEEM.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Must hold a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Education.
2. Must hold a valid Missouri Teaching Certificate in a teaching field.
3. The coach will adhere to all local, state and federal regulations.
4. The coach will abide by all rules and regulations established by the Poplar Bluff R-1 Board of
Education.
5. The coach will abide by and uphold all rules and regulations established by the Missouri State
High School Activities Association.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Coaches individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport
involved.
2. Plans and schedules a regular program of practice in season.
3. Works closely with the Athletic Director in scheduling interscholastic contests.
4. Recommends purchase of equipment, supplies, and uniforms, as appropriate.
5. Maintains necessary attendance forms, insurance records, and similar paperwork.
6. Oversees the safety conditions of the facility or area in which assigned sport is conducted at
all times that students are present.
7. Establishes performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition in his sport.
8. Enforces discipline and sportsman like behavior at all times, and establishes and oversees
penalties for breach of such standards by individual students.
9. Will have a good working knowledge of rules and regulations of the sport he or she will be
coaching.
10. As a representative of the Poplar Bluff School District, the coach will create a favorable
impression of our school system to other schools and communities.

EXPECTATIONS OF COACHES:

Poplar Bluff Coaches are expected to:

1. Have as a purpose the desire to create a positive influence on players, fans, colleagues, and
others to win. The desire to win should never override the health, safety, or welfare of the
athletes.
2. Possess a strong value structure, including a solid work ethic.
3. Promote the athletic program by having strategies for involving others, including parents and
media, in two-way communication.
4. Motivate those directly and indirectly associated with the program, resulting in participant,
assistant and supporter sense of ownership.
5. Have understanding and control required to respond to a total setting even during the most
highly pitched emotional situation.
6. Establish and maintain positive relationships with persons involved in the school's operation.
7. Be organized and prepared. The coach remains flexible at all times, remaining constantly
aware of the need for revision and change.
8. Be a continuous student of the game, constantly searching for better methods, techniques and
strategies.
9. Be dedicated and committed to the coaching profession.
10. Take an active role in the prevention of drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse.

11. Be thoroughly acquainted with the contest rules and be responsible for their interpretation to
team members.
12. Actively use their influence to enhance good sportsmanship by their spectators and instruct
players in their sportsmanship responsibilities.
13. Show respect and support for contest officials.
14. Keep Athletic Director informed of major problems and decisions.
15. Be a good host to opponents, treating them as guests.
16. Inform players of the conduct expected of them; in the locker room, in other school facilities,
on the floor or field, and on the bus.
17. Instruct athletes to stand quietly and respectfully when honoring the national anthem.
18. Instruct athletics as to the potential dangers of participating in that sport.
19. Properly condition players that are members of their squad.
20. Turn off lights, lock doors and see that building and equipment are secure.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Length of season in sport that they are coaching. Salary to be established annually by the Poplar Bluff Board of Education.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be done informally on an annual basis.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

1. Must be able to verbally communicate with students, parents and staff.
2. Must be able to understand oral communications.
3. Must have correctable vision in order to read written communications.
