JOB DESCRIPTION

 

TITLE:   Medical Assistant

 

Position Summary:

 

The Medical Assistant is a licensed public health professional providing support to the Poplar Bluff School District in providing health education and guidance to interrupt ongoing disease transmission. The Medical Assistant will perform administrative and clinical duties under the direction of the Director of Health Services, Nurse and the Office Manager. The Medical Assistant shall be responsible for compliance of School nursing practice standards. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, charting electronic medical records as necessary, taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, maintaining student medical records, and performing diagnostic procedures and treatments as ordered.

 

Clinical duties may include:

 

        • The medical assistant will adhere to all local, state and federal regulations.
        • Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping rooms neat, clean and stocked with supplies.
        • Assist patients needing ambulatory assistance as necessary.
        • Assist and perform diagnostic procedures and treatments as ordered.
        • Dispose of contaminated supplies and bio-hazardous waste according to policy.
        • Assure safe care by following and adhering to policy and procedures in all daily practices.
        • Schedule appointments using the computer system.
        • Documents patient care services by charting in school electronic health records.
        • Maintains continuity among nursing teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs in the electronic health record systems.
        • Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information; responding to requests; participating in team problem-solving methods.
        • Manages multi-line phone system and documents phone calls.
        • Will operate other office automation equipment (i.e. scanner, fax, printer and copier) This position will require prioritization, prompt action, and attention to detail in documentation and data management. Medical assistants are required to follow all designated scripts and comply with policies and procedures provided by the Poplar Bluff R-I District regarding confidentiality and data security for the handling of sensitive client information and protected health information. Dialogue with contacts will be guided by standard protocols to obtain any symptom history and other relevant health information, make appropriate, clinical services, and other essential support services.

 

        • Essential Functions:

 

      • Employ dynamic communication and interpersonal skills, cultural competency/sensitivity, tactful language, and empathetic interviewing skills to build rapport and maintain trust with patients of varied backgrounds.
      • Initiate prompt communication with people through text, phone calls, email, and other communication platforms as necessary.
      • Collaborate with key service providers to transfer client information and ensure expedited initiation of appropriate medical or social support services, per local protocols.
      • Obtain and document relevant information, including demographics, underlying medical conditions, and other risk factors.
      • Utilize a computer, tablet, and/or cell phone with appropriate access to required applications, databases, and/or web-based platforms, daily.
      • Participate in requisite trainings, regular program meeting and quality monitoring improvement activities in order to ensure and enhance the quality of program outcomes.
      • Maintain patient confidentiality and ensure that all information is collected in concordance with local data privacy and confidentiality standards.
      • Be physically mobile and have current driver’s license in State of Missouri. Have a vehicle available to travel between schools as scheduled or when called.
      • Be able to carry approximately 25 lbs. and operate knowledgeably instruments used for screenings. Be able to carry instruments to and from car to the school and up and down several flights of stairs.
      • Have the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff and members of the medical profession.    
      • Required Qualifications:
      • The position will require responding to public health emergencies with rapid turnaround times for communication, initiation and completion of assignments. The position will require daily use of a computer, telephone, or cell phone, and access to a secure internet connection. This position may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of less than 50 pounds and involves viewing a computer screen 50 to 75 percent of the time. The position may require both onsite and telework activities, while complying with all requirements for client confidentiality, records, and data security. The position may require working non-standard hours (i.e., evenings, weekends). The position may require some travel and occasional participation in off-site functions.

  • Experience with health education, community outreach, medical care, social services, or public health services.Minimum Educational Qualifications: 
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), or Certified Nursing Assistant (CAN).
