Title:   Coach

Reports To:  Building Administrators and the Director of Athletics

Job Goal: To help each participating student achieve a high level of skill, an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem.

Qualifications:  

  • Head Coaches must hold a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.  
  • Head Coaches must hold a valid Missouri Teaching Certificate in a teaching field.
  • The coach will adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • The coach will abide by all rules and regulations established by the Poplar Bluff R-I Board of Education.
  • The coach will abide by and uphold all rules and regulations established by the Missouri State High School 

Activities Association.

 

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Coach individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved.
  • Plan and schedule a regular program of practice in season. 
  • Works closely with the Athletic Director in scheduling interscholastic contests.
  • Recommends purchase of equipment, supplies, and uniforms, as appropriate.
  • Maintains necessary attendance forms, insurance records, and similar paperwork.  
  • Oversee the safety conditions of the facility or area where the assigned sport is conducted. 
  • Establishes performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition in his/her sport.
  • Enforces discipline and sportsman-like behavior at all times, and establishes and oversees penalties for breach of such standards by individual students.
  • Has a good working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the sport he or she is coaching.
  • As a representative of the Poplar Bluff R-I School District, the coach will reflect a favorable impression of our school system to other schools and communities.

 

EXPECTATIONS OF COACHES:

 

  • Follow all policies set forth by the board of education.
  • Follow all building and department rules and procedures.
  • Have as a purpose the desire to create a positive influence on players, fans, colleagues, and others to win.  The desire to win should never override the health, safety, or welfare of the athletes.
  • Possess strong values and work ethic.
  • Promote the athletic program by having strategies for involving others, including parents and media. 




  • Motivate those directly and indirectly associated with the program, resulting in participant, assistant, and supporter sense of ownership.
  • Have the understanding and control required to respond to a total setting even during the most highly pitched emotional situation.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with persons involved in the school’s operation.
  • Be organized and prepared.  The coach remains flexible at all times, remaining constantly aware of the need for revision and change.
  • Be a continuous student of the game, constantly searching for better methods, techniques, and strategies.
  • Be dedicated and committed to the coaching profession.
  • Take an active role in the prevention of drug, alcohol, and tobacco abuse.
  • Be thoroughly acquainted with the contest rules and be responsible for their interpretation to team members.
  • Actively use their influence to enhance good sportsmanship by their spectators and instruct players in their sportsmanship responsivities.
  • Show respect and support for contest officials.
  • Keep Athletic Director informed of major problems and decisions.
  • Be a good host to opponents, treating them as guests.
  • Inform players of the conduct expected of them, in the locker room, other school facilities, on the floor or field, and on the bus.
  • Instruct athletics as to the potential dangers of participating in that sport.
  • Properly condition players that are members of their squad.
  • Turn off lights, lock doors, and see that the building and equipment are secure.

Essential Functions:

  • Must be able to bend, lift and carry up to 30-40 lbs.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with teachers, students, administrators, and other staff.
  • Must be able to read, understand and follow up on written orders and instructions.
  • Must have dexterous use of both hands so as to be able to operate computers and other related office equipment.
  • Must be able to move freely. 
  • Any other duties assigned by the Administration.
