JOB DESCRIPTION

 

TITLE:    ENGLISH TEACHER

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN EDUCATION.  HOLD A VALID TEACHING CERTIFICATE IN THEIR TEACHING AREA.  SUCH ALTERNATIVES TO THE ABOVE QUALIFICATIONS AS THE BOARD MAY FIND APPROPRIATE AND ACCEPTABLE.

 

REPORTS TO:  BUILDING PRINCIPAL OR HIS DESIGNEE

 

JOB GOAL:  TO DEVELOP IN EACH PUPIL SKILLS OF LISTENING, SPEAKING, READING AND WRITING THAT ARE FUNDAMENTAL TO GOOD COMMUNICATION AND LITERATE CITIZENSHIP;  TO DEVELOP APPRECIATION OF GOOD LITERATURE OF ALL TYPES;  TO MOTIVATE PUPILS TO READ WIDELY FOR INFORMATION AND RECREATION;  TO DEVELOP STANDARDS FOR CRITICAL JUDGEMENT OF WRITTEN AND ORAL COMMUNICATIONS TRANSMITTED BY MASS MEDIA;  TO DISCOVER AND DEVELOP SPECIAL TALENTS OF PUPILS IN FIELD OF ENGLISH.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the time designated.
  2. Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of the students.
  1. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  1. Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.
  1. Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  2. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and __ in harmony with the goals__establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
  1. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  1. Strives to implement by instruction and action the district's philosophy of education instructional goals and objectives.
  1. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  1. Diagnoses the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists as required.
  1. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  1. Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.
  1. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  1. Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  1. Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and, cooperatively with department heads, evaluates their job performance.
  1. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  2. Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Teaches content and skills in English language, literature, composition, reading and journalism to secondary pupils, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.

 

  1. Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  1. Adapts English material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge pupils.
  1. Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids appropriate to the interest and maturity level of pupils;  maintains required inventory records.
  1. Adapts the curriculum to provide individual, small group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual pupil.
  1. Develops standards for critical analysis through group discussions based on a variety of mass media an classical and contemporary literature.
  1. Encourages pupils to think independently and to express original ideas.
  2. Evaluates each pupil's progress in English skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing).
  3. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an order, productive classroom environment.
  1. Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems.
  1. Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.
  2. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  3. Works with pupils and other classroom teachers in such activities as preparing material for the school newspaper or yearbook, assisting with PTA programs, or coordinating entries in essay contests.
  1. Administers or monitors group tests.
  2. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  3. Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
  4. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and in self selected professional growth activities.
  1. Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which he will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Number of days in school calendar.  Salary to be established by the Board.

 

EVALUATION:  Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Performance Based Teacher Evaluation.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

 

  1. Must be able to communicate orally and in writing.
  2. Must be able to read printed and handwritten material.
  3. Must be able to hear to evaluate students oral skills.
  4. Must be able to move freely throughout the classroom.
  5. Must be able to lift and carry textbooks.
  6. Must be able to climb a chair or a small ladder to change bulletin boards.
