JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: CUSTODIAN
REPORTS TO: ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT, BUILDING PRINCIPAL AND HEAD CUSTODIAN, IF AVAILABLE.
JOB GOAL: THE CUSTODIAN WORKS UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF BUILDING PRINCIPAL OR HIS DESIGNEE. CLEANS AND WAXES FLOORS; CLEANS FURNITURE AND WALLS; KEEPS RESTROOMS CLEAN; MAINTAINS EQUIPMENT AND TURNS OFF LIGHTS; PERFORMS SEMI-SKILLED DUTIES IN MAINTAINING BUILDING AND EQUIPMENT; PERFORMS OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.

Performance Responsibilities
- The custodian will adhere to all local, state and national regulations.
- They will adhere to all rules and regulations set forth by the Poplar Bluff Board of Education.
- The custodian is under the direct supervision of the head custodian/building principal. The principal will keep the administrative assistant posted of any problems with custodians.
- Ability to perform semi-skilled work in various trades.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- The skill to use basic tools and equipment.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Clean and wax floors.
- Sweep and mop floors
- Assure all dust and gum are removed
- Mop floors using detergent and water
- Strip old wax from floors with a buffer
- Remove stripper and allow to dry
- Apply wax and buff when dry
- Operate a vacuum sweeper if necessary
- Sweep outside walks and steps
- Clean furniture and walls
- Clean ash trays and empties wastepaper baskets
- Dust furniture, desks and woodwork
- Wipe spots off walls when necessary
- Wash windows
- Clean water fountains
- Keep restroom clean
- Clean walls of restrooms
- Sweep and mop floors daily
- Clean commodes and water basins
- Scrub shower stalls when necessary
- Maintain a supply of toilet tissue and paper towels
- Mow and trim lawn and maintain shrubs
- Unlock all doors each morning
- Check to make sure the heat is on throughout the building
- Lock up building, securing all doors and turning off all unnecessary lights.
- Performs semi-skilled duties in maintaining building.
- Replace window panes if required.
- Replace light bulbs
- Resets break switches
- Checks and adjusts room temperatures
- Checks boilers periodically and reports malfunctions to principal.
- Repairs lockers and doors if required.
- Reports all acts of vandalism to principal
- Establishes and maintains a regular schedule for cleaning building
- Reports needed supplies to the principal
- Reports any irregularities to the principal
- Checks playground equipment when requested
- Remove kitchen grease trap above range for cleaning by cooks once every 6 months. Then replace trap.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Asbestos – required to take and pass 2 hour asbestos training as required by AHERA within 60 days of employment.
- Follow all E.P.A. guidelines for Buildings/Grounds.
Essential Functions of the Job
- Must be able to lift, carry and load equipment and supplies that will weigh as much as 30-60 pounds, 3-10 times a day.
- Must be able to climb and work from ladders, step ladders and step stools.
- Must have dexterous use of both hands so as to be able to operate power tools, hand tools and mechanical hand tools.
- Must have previous experience in the safe operation and use of tools such as drills, saws, lawn mowers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, etc.
- Must be able to work indoors and outdoors (outdoors in hot, wet and cold (below freezing weather).
- This is strenuous work requiring good corrected vision, hearing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, lifting and the ability to work on the school buildings and grounds.
- Must be able to communicate clearly with teachers, students, administrators and other staff members.
- Must be able to read and understand written orders and instructions.
- Must be able to understand and follow up on oral and telephone delivered orders or instructions.
- Must have a valid state driver’s license.
