JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: FACS TEACHER
QUALIFICATIONS: MUST HOLD A MINIMUM OF BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN EDUCATION. HOLD A VALID TEACHING CERTIFICATE IN THEIR TEACHING AREA. SUCH ALTERNATIVES TO THE ABOVE QUALIFICATIONS AS THE BOARD MAY FIND APPROPRIATE AND ACCEPTABLE.
REPORTS TO: BUILDING PRINCIPAL OR HIS DESIGNEE
JOB GOAL: TO DEVELOP IN EACH PUPIL AN AWARENESS OF THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD HOME ENVIRONMENT AS A BASIS FOR SATISFACTORY HOME AND FAMILY LIVING; TO MOTIVATE EACH PUPIL TO ACQUIRE COMPETENCIES, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS RELATING TO CHILD DEVELOPMENT, CLOTHING AND TEXTILES, CONSUMER EDUCATION, FAMILY RELATIONS, FOOD, NUTRITION, HOME NURSING, SAFETY, HOME DECORATION AND HOUSEHOLD EQUIPMENT; TO DISCOVER AND DEVELOP SPECIAL TALENTS OF PUPILS IN HOME ECONOMICS.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the location and at the times designated.
- Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests
and abilities of the students.
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity
and interests of the students.
- Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of
immediate superior.
- Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and - in harmony with
the goals - establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to
communicate these objectives to students.
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the
physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals
or student groups involved.
- Strives to implement by instruction and action the district's philosophy of education and
instructional goals and objectives.
- Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports
as required.
- Diagnoses the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of
district specialists as required.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials
and facilities.
- Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and
administrative regulation.
- Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and
conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and
procedure and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
- Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes
outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
- Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) ad volunteer(s) and,
cooperatively with department heads, evaluates their job performance.
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Attends staff meetings and services on staff committees as required.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teaches concepts and skills in foods and nutrition, clothing and textiles, home management,
family relationships and consumer education to secondary pupils, utilizing course of study
adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
SECONDARY 15
- Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative
regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Organizes class activities so that preparation, instruction or laboratory work, and clean-up
activities can be accomplished within the allotted class time.
- Demonstrates skill techniques in home economics and prepares appropriate instructional aids
and display materials to enhance learning.
- Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the
needs of each pupil.
- Instructs pupils in use, care and safe operation of household equipment and appliances. Makes
minor adjustments and requests repairs to equipment as required.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive
environment in the laboratory-type classroom.
- Evaluates each pupil's progress in concepts and skills of subject taught and contribution to a
group project or goal.
- Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids and equipment; maintains required inventory
records; purchases groceries and other supplies as authorized.
- Encourages pupils to demonstrate learned techniques at home with their families.
- Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.
- Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils
solve health, attitude and learning problems.
- Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
- Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
- Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
- Maintains current vocational information for pupils interested in professional careers and
resource materials for those who plan to be homemakers.
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the
district, and in self-selected professional growth activities.
- Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which
the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Number of days in school calendar. Salary to be established by the Board.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Performance Based Teacher Evaluation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
- Be able to communicate effectively both orally and written.
- Be able to hear and see in order to instruct efficiently.
- Must be able to lift and carry heavy boxes of files and grocery orders.
- Must stand, stoop and move about within small areas and react quickly to emergencies.
- Must use both hands well due to safety aspects in equipment use and in demonstrations.
- Must be experienced in use of utensils and other equipment.
